One of the ways in which you can accumulate GM Card earnings (to be later redeemed when buying a GM motor vehicle) is by shopping online with the card. By default, 5% of what you pay, when shopping online using the GM Card is added to your GM Card earnings account. But that figure can go up, if you shop at one of the Bonus Shop stores. In the latter scenario, you end up accumulating more GM Card earnings faster. Subsequently, you get the chance to save more, when acquiring your GM vehicle of choice.

What can you buy using the GM Card?

According to the GM Card website at shop.gmcard.com/h____.htm, there is really no limit to what you can buy using the GM card. The card can be useful to you when shopping for apparel. It can be useful to you when shopping for computers and electronics. It can be useful to you when shopping for software in app-stores. It can be useful when shopping for beauty and health products. It can be useful when shopping for services… and anything you can think of.

Remember, the GM Card is basically an ordinary MasterCard, issued by a bank (Capital One Bank), and anything you can buy using any other bank card, you can buy also buy using this particular MasterCard.

How much are you charged for using the GM Card?

The fees associated with the GM Card are exactly the same as the fees charged for shopping online using any other bank card. You don’t pay anything extra just because you paid for stuff using the GM card. The end result is that the ‘discount’ you ultimately get from GM when you redeem the earnings (at the point of purchasing a GM vehicle) is actually a discount in the realest sense of the word.

What difference does shopping using the GM Card make?

In terms of the payment process, shopping using the GM card isn’t different from shopping using any other card. It is not any more complicated. If it is a brick and mortar store you are shopping in, you just swipe the card. If you are shopping online, you enter the card number and the signature code. But the difference is in the fact that you accumulate earnings in your GM Card account every time you pay for something using the card. These ‘earnings’ are redeemable for ‘discounts’ when buying GM vehicles. The discounts in question can be substantial, running into thousands of dollars. So using the GM card is worthwhile, if you are considering buying a vehicle from GM at some point later. That is because using this card (for your other day to day purchases) can translate into a huge discount being availed to you, when you go to buy the GM vehicle you fancy.

As a GM Cardholder, you will find yourself having to log online, so as to manage the (bank) account backing up the card, or to manage the earnings accumulated through the card. The GM Card login page is at www.gmcard.com/login.

You notice that there are two main options available to you, on the GM Card login page. The first option is that of managing the Capital One account. This is the account, with Capital One bank, under which the GM MasterCard is issued. The second option is that of managing your GM Card earnings – things like checking out your earnings statement, checking private offers availed to you, checking out or reviewing the GM Card rewards program rules, changing your profile… and pretty much anything else you can think of along those lines.

The GM Card login process

The steps you will have to take in the GM Card login process will depend on exactly what you want to do. If your intention is simply to manage the GM card earnings (e.g. get a statement on them, review the program’s rules and so on), you will be able to do everything on site, without being redirected. Upon clicking on the ‘manage your earnings’ button, a pop-up window will come up, where you can enter the ‘earnings’ username and password.

On the other hand, if what you want to do is manage the Capital One bank account on whose basis the GM MasterCard is issued, you should be ready to be redirected to another site. That is a scenario where, upon clicking on the ‘manage your Capital One account,’ you will be redirected to the HSBC Bank’s website.

Beyond the login

Once you succeed in logging in, your options will depend on what you chose to do (and by extension, whether the subsequent login was done locally on the GM card site or on the HSBC website). If it is a local login, within the GM Card website, you will be able to do things that pertain to the management of your GM Card earnings. But you won’t be able to do things that pertain to management of the MasterCard. On the other hand, if the login was onto the HSBC bank, you will be able to undertake the MasterCard management tasks. But you won’t be in a position to manage the GM Card earnings there. On the HSBC Bank, you can obtain a statement for your GM MasterCard, pay bills, apply for extra cards or credit limit increments, change account details… and pretty much everything else you can think of.

GM Card sign up

It is worth mentioning that the GM Card login page at www.gmcard.com/login also serves as the GM Card sign up page – for folks who don’t have the GM Card and who are interested in having one.

The GM Card is best described as a rewards/customer-incentive card, offered by the General Motors Corporation. It is a card through which you can accumulate ‘earnings’ which you can subsequently redeem when purchasing an eligible GM vehicle. It is, thus, a card you can use to hasten your acquisition of a GM vehicle, and to effectively end up acquiring a GM vehicle at a lower cost.

The basic workings of the GM Card

At its core, the GM Card turns out to be a MasterCard, issued by Capital One bank, with General Motors only administering the earnings/rewards aspect of it. This is a card you can use when purchasing pretty much anything you can think of, from groceries, to clothing and onto utilities and anything in between. Whatever you opt to spend money on, so long as you pay using the GM Card, you accumulate ‘earnings’ (which are calculated at 5%). Once you have enough of those ‘earnings’ you can approach GM, so as to redeem them towards the acquisition of your new ride.

What vehicles can be acquired using GM Card earnings?

Eligibility in terms of vehicles that can be acquired using the GM Card vary from year to year. But you will be mostly looking at the brands that GM is famous for, including the Buick, the Chevrolet, the GMC and the ever-alluring Cadillac.

The GM Card website at www.gmcard.com offers you the opportunity to search for eligible vehicles by both their brands and their styles. In terms of the latter, you can get a variety of ordinary cars, trucks, vans and SUV crossovers to choose from.

So, how exactly does the process of redeeming earnings work?

It is a straightforward process. According to the GM Card website at www.gmcard.com, if you want to redeem your earnings, you have to start by figuring out what you have, in terms of earnings. To do this, you log in to the said site. While at it, you should also check the redemption allowance available to you. Having done that, you approach a dealer in one of the GM vehicles, select the vehicle you want to buy or lease, let the dealer know that you want to take advantage of your earnings… and everything will roll on from there.

In what specific ways can the GM card earnings be useful?

The first way in which GM card earnings can be useful would be to the extent that you can take advantage of them to lower your down payment. Also, taking advantage of your GM card earnings, you can lower your monthly payments. Further, if you want to get optional add-ons for your vehicle, you can finance the acquisition of the same using your GM card earnings.
